Ever wonder if your coffee beans are really fresh? Stale coffee beans are more plentiful than you know. There is a simple test to see if your favourite brand of coffee beans are as fresh as they want you to believe.
You say you buy the more expensive beans because they are fresher? Maybe you better do this just to make sure you’re getting your monies worth.
Get yourself a new ziplock bag and dump in a half cup of your just bought coffee beans; squeeze the air out of it and seal. Let it sit out on the counter for 24 hours and watch what happens. Do you have stale coffee beans? If that ziplock bag didn’t puff up because of gas pressures you most definitely have stale coffee beans.
The test is that simple and gives you an idea if that expensive coffee brand you rave about is actually the best you can do. For freshest coffee we suggest you either buy from a roaster near you or online coffee retailers that normally roasts their coffee’s just before shipping ans has an actual roasting date stamped on the bag.

Here’s a little update to this test.
I decided to go out and purchase a bag of premium coffee beans at, of all places, Walmart. The brand name is very well known in the Italian community but I won’t mention it. (Lawsuits ya know)
As soon as I opened the bag it was obvious these would not be fresh. These medium roast coffee beans appear to have been cleaned as there is no shine or oily residue, just dry looking and feeling.
I decided to throw half a cup of beans into a baggy and run this test anyway’s and of course it was a complete failure. There was absolutely no gas build-up leaving the zipbag as flat as it was when I sealed it.
Now, to be honest, the coffee isn’t horrible and I have tried it in cappuccino’s and single cup machines but just can’t get rid of that watered down taste. Fortunately the wife will drink anything (no offense honey) Lol.
So, premium coffee doesn’t always mean what you think. If there is no coffee roasting date don’t expect fresh. That’s my 2 cents and I’m sticking to it.
